Who I work with.
I work with adults who are 18 years+. I hold a particular interest in working with those who present with the following:
Difficult or traumatic life experiences (either recent or historical) that impact you in the present, that you are struggling to make sense of, or that you are wishing to obtain help in processing.
Difficulties in intimate-partner or family-of-origin relationships.
Difficulties in how you feel about yourself, or your sense of identity.
My services may be particularly well suited if you have experienced your difficulties over a long period of time, you may have worked with other therapists in the past, and you are open to a longer term approach to work on the underlying factors contributing to your current symptoms.
I also work with those who present with the following:
A general desire to improve overall psychological wellbeing and/or to understand yourself and your past experiences.
Difficulties managing emotions, thoughts, and/or behavioural and physical reactions to difficult situations.
Difficulties in managing stress or burnout.
Anxiety, including anxiety disorders, phobias, and panic.
Borderline personality disorder features.
If you are struggling with something that is not listed here, please contact me to check our suitability in working together.
I am not able to offer services to the following:
Those under 18 years of age.
Family, parenting, or couples counselling.
Forensic / legal cases.
I do not provide specialised treatment for sleep disorders or eating disorders, and do not accept Eating Disorder Plans.
Clients under Chronic Disease Management Plans, DVA, NDIS, or WorkCover.
Those in need of support outside of appointment times, or who require a degree of support more suitable to a practice with multiple practitioners present and available (e.g., those who are highly suicidal with recent and multiple hospitalisations, those who have difficulties in maintaining boundaries, or those who have difficulties with aggression).
Those with difficulties committing to or attending an ongoing appointment time on either a weekly or fortnightly basis.
My approach to therapy.
I aim to tailor my approach to therapy to suit your needs. Therapy provides a space to explore your psychological wellbeing in a confidential, trauma-informed, and safe environment. Whether you are wishing to learn new skills to manage your psychological wellbeing, gain treatment for a specific psychological disorder, understand yourself better, or simply have a space to talk through difficulties, we will work out a collaborative plan for therapy to meet your needs.
In our first session together, you can expect an opportunity to ask more about my services. We will then explore what has brought you to therapy and what you are hoping to achieve from sessions together, including whether you are hoping for short- or long-term support, and how frequently you are willing to commit to attending in order to achieve your goals. I will provide a recommendation for the type of therapy that I feel will be most suitable for you, and the frequency of attendance that will likely help you meet your goals. I generally find that weekly attendance is the most effective ‘therapeutic dose’ at least initially, however this can vary between individuals.
Therapy can be brief (a few sessions) through to lasting for years - this depends on what you are hoping to achieve, the duration of time you have been experiencing your difficulties, the complexity of your difficulties, and whether we will be exploring lifelong experiences and patterns of behaviour.
If we feel that we are a fit and you feel I am the right person to support you in therapy, I will offer you a dedicated and ongoing appointment time reserved specifically for you, for the time that we work together.
I use a cognitive behavioural approach in therapy, which specifically includes the evidence-based approaches of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Schema Therapy, and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy.
